Orkla to buy German ice cream firm Eis Gräbner

FBR Staff Writer Published 08 May 2017

Orkla Food Ingredients, through its German subsidiary, Eisunion has agreed to acquire Eis Ludwig Gräbner (Eis Gräbner) for an undisclosed price.

Based in northern Germany, Eis Gräbner is a sales and distribution company.

The acquisition is expected to bolster the position of Orkla Food as a provider of ice cream ingredients and accessories.

Also, Eis Gräbner is said to complement the geographical presence of Eisunion which was acquired by Orkla Food Ingredients in 2015 to establish a leading market position in southern Germany.

Orkla Food Ingredients EVP and CEO Pål Eikeland said: "The purchase of Eis Gräbner complements Orkla's current position in the ice cream ingredients and accessories segment in Germany.

“The acquisition offers potential for expanding our product range, broadening our distribution and realising synergies with our present operations.”

Established in 1929, Eis Gräbner has 18 employees with its head office and warehouse located in Hannover. Last year, the company generated revenue of €6.5m.

Its new parent, Orkla Food Ingredients is a bakery ingredients provider serving the Nordic region apart from other countries in Europe.

Orkla Food’s primary categories are margarine and butter blends, marzipan and ice cream ingredients, bread and cake improvers, yeast, and mixes. The company has sales and distribution firms across 22 countries and is a part of the Orkla Group which has a workforce of 18,000 employees all around the world.

Last month, Orkla Food through its subsidiary NIC Enterprises had signed and completed an agreement to acquire an 85% stake in UK-based sales and distribution company, Orchard Valley Foods. Orchard Valley supplies ingredients and accessories to the bakery, chocolate and ice cream segments across the UK.
